Kodyma: a little history

Kodyma dates from 1754, when Prince J?zef Lubomirski ordered an old farmstead to be moved and a new settlement founded in its place. In the 18th century a trade route from Podillia to Crimea ran through it, and its orchards and apiaries earned it the nickname of the honey farmstead. A railway station opened in 1870, and Kodyma became a town on 5 November 1979. Residents honour their fellow townsman Sergeant Pavlo Baltian (1994–2023), posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.

Famous people of Kodyma

The cyclist Borys Shukhov (born 1947), Olympic champion in 1972, and the theatre designer Naum Sobol (1898–1967) were born in Kodyma.

Kodyma today

The town lies in the valley of the Kodyma River, a tributary of the Southern Buh, on the Odesa–Kyiv railway, 242 km from Odesa; its name is linked to a Cuman word meaning east. Its oldest landmarks are the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (1780) and the Transfiguration Church (1850), and a late 19th-century manor houses the local history museum.
