Konotop, the town of a famous battle
Konotop is first recorded in October 1634, when King W?adys?aw IV Vasa granted lands near the town to Mykola Tsetysov. A fortification built in 1634–1637 where the Yezuch and Lypka rivers meet was rebuilt as a strong fortress in 1640, and under Khmelnytskyi the town became a Cossack company centre. In 1659 Colonel Hryhorii Hulianytskyi held the besieged town until, on 28 June, Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi's army routed the Muscovite forces in the Battle of Konotop. In 1672 Ivan Samoilovych was elected hetman nearby. In March 2022 the encircled city rejected a Russian ultimatum, and the occupiers left Sumy Oblast in early April.
