Korets, a town with chronicle history

Korets enters the Kyiv Chronicle in 1150 as Korchesk, in the account of the conflict between Yurii Dolgorukii and Iziaslav Mstyslavych. In 1380 Jogaila granted the land to Prince Fedir Ostrozkyi, and in 1386 a castle was built and the Korchyk River diverted into a new channel. From the 15th century the town belonged to the Korecki princes and became one of the largest in Volhynia; in 1651 it passed to the Czartoryskis. The first Hebrew printing press in Ukraine opened here in 1776, and in 1788 a porcelain and faience factory began work, its wares becoming known across Europe.

Names linked to Korets

Linguist and churchman Lavrentii Zyzanii lived in Korets in 1612–1619, and Hasidic rebbe Pinchas of Koretz (1726–1791) made the town famous. Hryhorii Skovoroda, Taras Shevchenko (1848), Honor? de Balzac (1847 and 1850) and Lesya Ukrainka (1878) all visited. Painter Oleksandr Yakymchuk was born here.

Korets today

Korets stands on the Korchyk, a tributary of the Sluch, and is listed among Ukraine's historic towns; its ten churches have earned it the nickname of a Christian Mecca. Highlights include the castle ruins with an arched stone bridge, the Holy Trinity Convent with its apiary 'bee temple', St. Anthony's Church (1533), the late-18th-century Horchynski Palace and the Korets History Museum.
