Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi: from the chronicle to today

Rus-era Korsun is first mentioned in the Kyiv Chronicle under 1172 and was destroyed by the Mongols in 1240. In 1580 it passed to the Vyshnevetsky princes, and in 1584 it received Magdeburg rights. In May 1648 Bohdan Khmelnytsky's army and Tugay Bey's Tatars defeated the Polish crown hetmans Potocki and Kalinowski near the town, and from 1648 to 1712 Korsun was a regimental town. It has carried its current name since 1944 and was liberated on 14 February 1944 during the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi operation.

People linked to Korsun

Cossack figures tied to the town include acting hetman Hryhorii Hulianytskyi, who led the defence of Konotop, and Hanna Zolotarenko, third wife of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, whom he married in the Church of St Elijah in 1651. Natives include flautist Oleksandr Khymychenko (1856–1947), poet Andrii Vorushylo (1915–2003) and artist Mykola Husachenko (1893–1984).

The town today

Korsun stands on the Ros River, 76 km from Cherkasy. Its main sight is the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi State Historical and Cultural Reserve with the Poniatowski Palace and a 97-hectare park laid out from 1782 for Prince Stanis?aw Poniatowski. Also worth seeing are the Lopukhin-Demidov Palace, the Church of St Elijah and a stele marking Taras Shevchenko's 1859 stay. Flowers can be delivered to any address in the town.
