Kostopil: from Ostaltsi to today

The town grew out of the old settlement of Ostaltsi: Velyki and Mali Ostaltsi are recorded as property of the Zaslavsky princes in registers of 1648–1658. On 14 November 1783 Leonard Worcel, Grand Crown Master of the Kitchen, received a privilege from King Stanis?aw August to found a town here named Kostopil. In 1861 the estate passed to Prince O. Czartoryski, and in the 1890s the Rivne — Sarny — Luninets railway boosted local industry and trade. Kostopil became a town on 1 January 1923 and a county seat in 1925.

Kostopil is the birthplace of literary scholar and essayist Serhii Kozak, born here in 1961, a member of the National Writers' Union of Ukraine.

The town stands on the Zamchysko River, 38 km northeast of Rivne. Its best-known building is the Church of St Alexander Nevsky (1893), an example of Volhynian monumental architecture. Other landmarks include the Ascension Cathedral consecrated in 2015, the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus opened in 2008, the Taras Shevchenko monument (1995) and the local history museum.
