Kovel: five centuries of Magdeburg rights

Kovel's urban history dates from 24 December 1518, when King Sigismund I allowed Prince Vasyl Sanhushko to turn the village of Kovle into a town with Magdeburg rights and two annual fairs. On 4 June 1564 Kovel and its district passed to Prince Andrei Kurbsky. Timber was the main trade, floated down the Turiia all the way to Gda?sk. In 1795 Kovel became a county centre of Volhynia Governorate, and in 1846 Taras Shevchenko visited, later describing his Volhynian journey in "Varnak".

Famous people of Kovel

Kovel is the birthplace of rower Anastasiia Kozhenkova (b. 1986), 2012 Olympic champion, and of Abraham Zapruder (1905–1970), the American businessman behind the famous Zapruder film. Metropolitan Lev Kyshka (1668–1728) and philologist Kindrat Strashkevych (1815–1868) are also connected with the town. Kovel native Captain Anatolii Shylik (1976–2014) was posthumously awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 3rd class.

Kovel today

The town stands on the Turiia River and is one of the largest railway junctions in Western Ukraine, with lines running in six directions. Landmarks include the wooden Church of St Anne (1771), the Resurrection Cathedral (1877), the Annunciation and St Michael's (1903) churches, the former Friedrichson pharmacy once used by the Kosach family, and the Lesya Ukrainka monument (1991).
