Berestyn (formerly Krasnohrad): from a frontier fortress to today
The town began as a fortress: in 1731 the Belev fortress was founded here as the tenth stronghold of the defensive Ukrainian Line, and in 1775 it became the centre of the newly created Azov Governorate. In 1784 the settlement received town status and the name Kostiantynohrad; in 1922–1923 it was renamed Krasnohrad, and in 2024 it became Berestyn, after the Berestova River on which it stands. The town was liberated from Nazi troops on 19 September 1943, now celebrated as Town Day.
