Krasnoilsk in brief

Krasnoilsk first appears in a 1431 charter of the Moldavian ruler Alexander the Good under the name Krasna. For centuries the village was split into Krasna Putna, owned by Putna Monastery, and Krasna Ilskoho, owned from 1696 by Oleksandr Ilskyi. German colonists founded a glassworks on the outskirts in 1793, and a potash works and a second glassworks followed in 1851. The Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu visited in the summer of 1871. The two parts merged into one settlement in 1947, and Krasnoilsk became an urban-type settlement in 1968.

People linked to Krasnoilsk

The singer Maria Iliuts (born 1954), an honoured artist of Moldova, was born here. Krasnoilsk also honours its native Vasyl Burachuk (1994–2017), a sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Places every local knows

The Seretel River, a tributary of the Malyi Seret, runs through the middle of the settlement, and the Romanian border crossing is 8 km away. The Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (1792) stands next to the Intercession Church consecrated in 1991, and a convent in the Slatyna quarter keeps an old salt-water well. The famous Krasnoilsk Malanka on 13–14 January brings out Bears and the Gypsy, with about 500 participants.
