Kryzhopil: from its origins to today

Kryzhopil owes its existence to the railway: it grew up as a station on the Kyiv–Odesa line, construction of which began in the summer of 1866. Regular train service through the station opened in August 1870. The station took its name from the village of Kryzhopil (now Vysoke), 17 km away. In 1938 Kryzhopil became an urban-type settlement.

The settlement sits on the watershed between the Southern Buh and Dniester basins and remains a railway junction on the Kyiv–Odesa line. Key landmarks are Kryzhopil railway station, the Second World War memorial and the monument to victims of political repression.
