Varash: from the Polissia village of Hvarash to an energy town

Varash was first recorded in 1577, when the village of Hvarash belonged to Prince Mykhailo Czartoryski and lay in the Chortoryisk volost of Lutsk county. In 1776 the cross-domed St Michael's Church was built here and served until 1961. The modern town was founded in 1973 together with the West Ukrainian, now Rivne, Nuclear Power Plant, which its first director Volodymyr Korovkin led for 29 years. The settlement was named Kuznetsovsk in 1977 and became a town in 1984; the first power unit started on 22 December 1980 and the fourth in 2004. In 2016 the Verkhovna Rada restored the historical name Varash.

Notable people of Varash

Varash native Nina Kolosinska (1994), a medical service lieutenant, distinguished herself during the 2022 Russian invasion and was awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd class. Singer-songwriter DREVO, Maksym Derevianchuk (2001), was also born here.

Varash today

The town stands on the Styr River, 156 km from Rivne, as the satellite town of the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant, and is one of the few towns in the world with a nuclear plant on its coat of arms. Local landmarks include the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Palace of Culture (1992), the Izotop sports complex, the Volodymyr Ostapchuk Park and the Church of Saints Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia, consecrated in 2016.
