Lypovets: from its first mention to today

Lypovets is first recorded in 1545, when the settlement on an old chumak trade route in the upper Sob valley was called Aisyn Verkhnii. From 1601 it belonged to Prince Janusz Ostrogski, and in 1606 King Sigismund III granted it Magdeburg rights and two annual fairs. On 19 March 1651 Cossack regiments defeated the forces of Hetman Marcin Kalinowski beneath the walls of Lypovets Castle. After 1793 Lypovets became a district town of Kyiv Governorate with a silver bull on red as its arms, and in 1829 it hosted Ukraine's last witchcraft trial, which ended in acquittal. Town status was restored on 13 September 2001.

Notable people of Lypovets

Geologist and geographer Pavlo Tutkovsky (1858–1930), a founder of Ukrainian geology, was born here, as was Boichukist painter Ivan Lypkivsky (1892–1937).

Landmarks and local highlights

The town spans both banks of the Sob. Sights include the monument to the Battle of Lypovets, the wooden Church of the Intercession (1852), the old zemstvo hospital and district council building, a ruined 19th-century watermill, the Slovak Monument and the Lypovets necropolis.
