What to know about Lityn

The earliest record of Lityn is a charter of Prince Fedir Koriatovych, ruler of Podillia, dated 20 June 1391 and found in the National Historical Archives of Belarus. In the early 16th century Lityn was a trade and craft centre on the Kyiv–Lviv route, with a fortified castle on an island between the Zghar and Shmyhavka rivers. It received Magdeburg rights in 1578, became a Cossack company town of the Bratslav Regiment after 1648, and in November 1653 Bohdan Khmelnytsky received the Crimean khan's envoys here. From 1797 Lityn was a district centre of Podolia Governorate; folk rebel Ustym Karmaliuk was repeatedly held in its prison and led a breakout in 1827.

Notable people of Lityn

Lityn is the birthplace of heraldist and poet Mykola Bytynsky (1893–1972), painter Stepan Slobodianiuk-Podolian (1876–1932) and folklorist Petro Markushevsky (1919–2001). Two Heroes of Ukraine were born here: Brigadier General Serhii Sobko (2015) and tank officer Dmytro Dozirchyi (2022).

Lityn today

The settlement lies on the Zghar River, on the Vinnytsia–Khmelnytskyi highway. Its pride is the Ustym Karmaliuk Local History Museum, housed in the former prison with casemates from the 18th–19th centuries; residents also enjoy the Park of Culture and Recreation.
