Liuboml, a town from the chronicles

Liuboml's chronicle history begins in 1287, when the Hypatian Chronicle mentions it as the favourite town of Prince Volodymyr Vasylkovych of Volhynia, who died here in 1288. Under his rule it became a known crafts centre, and part of the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle was written here. In 1412 King W?adys?aw II Jagie??o began building the Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity, and in 1541 the town received Magdeburg rights. In 1768 Liuboml passed to Count Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, who built a palace here in 1782. In 1918 the town even issued its own postage stamps.

Notable natives of Liuboml

Actress Nataliia Uzhvii (1898–1986), People's Artist of the USSR and Shevchenko Prize laureate, was born in Liuboml, as were the poet Rostyslav Bratun (1927–1995) and the operatic tenor Sviatoslav Pikulskyi (born 1937), People's Artist of Ukraine.

Liuboml today

The town lies in the Polissia lowland on the Hapa River, about 17 km from the Polish border. Its landmarks include St George's Church (1280s), the oldest church in town, the Holy Trinity Church, the oldest Roman Catholic building in Volhynia, the remains of the Branicki Palace, the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (1884), the Zamchyshche hillfort and the local history museum.
