A short history of Lokhvytsia

The first written record of Lokhvytsia dates to 1320 and relates to its place within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1644 the settlement received Magdeburg rights. It was a company town of the Myrhorod Regiment in 1648–1658 and of the Lubny Regiment in 1658–1781, and its Cossacks fought at Pyliavtsi, Zboriv, Berestechko and Zhvanets.

Names linked to Lokhvytsia

Composer Isaak Dunaievskyi (1900–1955), known for popular film music, was born here. Philosopher and poet Hryhorii Skovoroda (1722–1794) stayed in Lokhvytsia in 1764, and writer Arkhyp Teslenko (1882–1911) has a monument in the town.

Landmarks and local character

Lokhvytsia lies on the Sula where the Lokhvytsia River flows into it. The Annunciation Church (1800) was the town's first stone building; other sights include the 19th-century stone trading row, the former district assembly building (1865) now housing the H. Skovoroda Local History Museum, a Skovoroda monument by I. Kavaleridze, the People's House (1901) designed by Vasyl Krychevskyi and the Pine Park nature site.
