Lubny: from the first record to today

According to legend, Lubny was founded around 988 by Prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavych as a fortress on the defensive line along the Sula. The town's written history begins in the Hypatian Chronicle, which mentions it under the year 1107. In 1589 Prince Oleksandr Vyshnevetskyi built a castle here, and for a time the town was called Oleksandriv; in 1591 Lubny received Magdeburg rights. In 1648–1649 and 1658–1781 it was the centre of the Lubny Cossack Regiment.

Notable people of Lubny

Neurosurgeon Andrii Romodanov (1920–1993), an academician and Hero of Socialist Labour, was born in Lubny, as was economist Oleksandr Shlikhter (1868–1940), academician and vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) visited Lubny in 1843–1846.

The town lies on the Sula River. Landmarks include the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (founded 1899), the water tower (1911), the former theological school building (1885), the Lubny Local History Museum, the V. Roik Embroidery Museum and the monument to the town's 1000th anniversary. Industry is represented by the Lubny machine-tool plant, Lubnymash and the pharmaceutical company Lubnyfarm, while Morozivska Dacha and the forestry college park are protected natural sites.
