What to know about Lysianka

Lysianka is first recorded in 1593, when King Sigismund III Vasa granted it to the nobleman Walenty Czermi?ski. In 1622 Ruthenian Voivode Jan Dani?owicz received a charter to found a town with Magdeburg rights, a town hall and markets on Mondays and Fridays. In 1648 Lysianka backed Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, and the Lysianka Regiment was formed at the castle under Maksym Kryvonis; the town then had four churches, and Patriarch Macarius of Antioch consecrated its Holy Trinity Monastery in 1653. In 1733 Aleksander Jab?onowski built a new fortified castle with towers.

Notable people of Lysianka

Lysianka is the birthplace of painter Prosper Horskyi (1813–1888), mathematician Ivan Sleshynskyi (1854–1931) and playwright and film director Leo Birinski (1884–1951). Captain Yurii Mykhailiuk (born 1989), a defender of Volnovakha, was born here and was named a Hero of Ukraine in 2022. The town appears in works by Taras Shevchenko and Panteleimon Kulish, and in Mykhailo Starytskyi's novella The Last Eagles.

Lysianka today

The settlement lies in the valley of the Hnylyi Tikych River. Visitors can see the Lysianka History Museum (founded 1967) with its Shevchenko in Lysianka hall, the Karlsbad and Hnylyi Tikych hydrological reserves, the Hromova Voda spring and an ancient hillfort.
