What to know about Mankivka

Mankivka is first mentioned in written sources in early August 1622. By 1629 it had 649 households and belonged to El?bieta Kalinowska. From 1648 it was the seat of the Mankivka company of the Uman Regiment. In 1654 Patriarch Macarius of Antioch passed through, and his son Paul of Aleppo described the town's Kalinowski palace, four churches, three ponds and the Trinity Monastery outside it. In 1726 Mankivka passed to the magnate Stanis?aw W?adys?aw Potocki, and in 1960 a majolica factory opened here. Mankivka was liberated from the Nazi occupiers on 7 March 1944.

Notable people of Mankivka

Chief Marshal of Aviation Borys Buhaiev (1923–2007), Soviet Minister of Civil Aviation, was born here, as were UNR Army soldier Kupriian Plakhtii (1900–1921), cartographer Anatolii Molochko (born 1948) and rally driver Borys Handzha (born 1980), Ukraine's overall rally champion of 2018.

The settlement spreads along both banks of the Mankivka River, 32 km north-east of Uman and 6.5 km from Potash station. Landmarks include the Church of the Archangel Michael, the Taras Shevchenko monument (1960) and the war memorial, while the Velykyi Lis protected woodland and the Striletskyi entomological reserve lie nearby.
