Marhanets: from a Cossack Sich to manganese mines

Marhanets has Cossack roots: on Tomakivka Island, between the Tomakivka and the Dnipro in the south of today's town, the Tomakivka Sich — the first Zaporozhian Sich — stood from the 1530s to 1593. The western part of town is the former Cossack village of Horodyshche. In July 1891 the Horodyshche mine began extracting manganese ore here, and in 1904 Marhanets railway station opened. A decree of 22 October 1938 merged the mining settlements into a town named after manganese. On 1 October 2025 Marhanets was awarded the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine.

Notable people of Marhanets

The poet Hryhorii Bidniak (1933–2020), an honorary citizen, was born in Marhanets, as was Dmytro Fedorenko (1933–2009), folklorist, writer and researcher of Cossack pedagogy. Basketball player Maryna Doroshenko (1981–2014) was also a native.

Marhanets today

The town's southern edge lies 1.5 km from the right bank of the Dnipro, and the Revun and Tomakivka rivers flow through it. Marhanets is the centre of the Nikopol manganese basin, discovered in 1883. Landmarks include the Miners' Palace of Culture, the local history museum (opened 29 April 1969), the Ivan Sirko memorial sign, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Love Park.
