Mohyliv-Podilskyi: a town on the Dniester
A settlement on the site of Mohyliv-Podilskyi is first recorded in 1450; in 1595 Moldavian ruler Ieremia Movil? built a castle here, and his son-in-law Stefan Potocki named the town Mohyliv in his memory. In 1621 Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi set out from here on the Khotyn campaign, and in 1657 the Dniester Cossack Regiment was restored under Ostap Hohol. In 1796 Mohyliv became a district town of Podolia Governorate with a coat of arms showing grapevines. In the 19th century it was the grain-trading centre of the Dniester region, and the railway from Zhmerynka arrived in 1892. Writer Mykhailo Starytskyi lived in the Karpivka suburb from 1868, and the Kosach family lived here in 1919–1924.
