What to know about Nova Odesa

Nova Odesa's story begins in 1776, when Cossacks of the Verbovanyi Regiment founded the stanytsia of Fedorivka on the Southern Bug, named after osaul Fedir Taran. The classical-style Church of St George was built here in 1805–1812. In 1832 an uhlan regiment named the Odesa Regiment was stationed in the village, and Fedorivka became Nova Odesa; it gained market-town status in 1860. Local baskets woven from reed mace and willow were shown at an exhibition in Kherson in 1890. A district centre from 1923, Nova Odesa became a city in 1976.

Notable people of Nova Odesa

Zaporozhian Cossack Fedir Taran (1731–1809) is regarded as the town's founder. Poet and songwriter Anatolii Poperechnyi (1934–2014) was born here. Writers Anatolii Vitrenko (1929–2020) and Mykola Prostakov (1937–2010) founded the Poshuk literary society in 2001. The Park of the Unbroken and the Alley of Memory, opened on 6 December 2023, honour the defenders of Ukraine.
