Zviahel (formerly Novohrad-Volynskyi): from the first record to today

The town's chronicled history begins in 1256, when the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle mentions the Rus town of Vozviahl, burned the next year by King Danylo's troops. Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi received the Zviahol estate in 1499 and in 1507 was allowed to build a castle and found a town. In 1648–1649 Zviahel was the centre of a Cossack regiment. Catherine II renamed it Novohrad-Volynskyi in 1795; on 16 November 2022 the Verkhovna Rada restored the historic name Zviahel.

Famous people of Zviahel

Zviahel is the birthplace of Lesya Ukrainka (1871–1913); the Kosach family lived here in 1868–1879, and her brother, mathematician and physicist Mykhailo Kosach (1869–1903), was born here too. Natives also include academician Borys Lysin (1883–1970), founder of silicate science in Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2021–2024, and Lieutenant General Oleksandr Pavliuk, Hero of Ukraine (2022).

Zviahel today

The town lies where the Smolka flows into the Sluch, 86 km west of Zhytomyr. Visitors see the remains of the Ostrozkyi castle, the stone Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (1784), the Lesya Ukrainka Museum, the Kosach Family Museum and the local history museum.
