What to know about Novi Petrivtsi

Novi Petrivtsi is recorded from 1622, when Zaporozhian Cossacks made the neighbouring Mezhyhiria Monastery their own. According to Lavrentii Pokhylevych, the village was founded at the monastery’s height to keep labour close by, and named for its proximity to Stari Petrivtsi. The haidamak Fedir Levchenko, who took Hostomel during the Koliivshchyna, was born here. A wooden three-frame church with icons from Mezhyhiria was built in 1746 and later moved to Cherkaska Sloboda.

People linked to Novi Petrivtsi

Native painter Stepan Rashchenko (born 1860) studied at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts and taught drawing in Khabarovsk for nearly 25 years. The village is also linked to Pavlo Suskyn, a medic of the UNR Army’s 4th Kyiv Division and hero of the Second Winter Campaign, philologist Professor Hryhorii Samoilenko (1935–2025) and footballer Serhii Starenkyi.
