Novomyrhorod: from the capital of New Serbia to today

Novomyrhorod's history goes back to the 1740s, when settlers from Myrhorod led by Colonel Vasyl Kapnist founded New Myrhorod near the Zaporozhian winter camp of Tresiahy. From 1752 it was the centre of New Serbia, home to its head Ivan Horvat, who began building the stone St Nicholas Cathedral on 6 December 1752. Novomyrhorod received town status in 1773, foreign consuls worked here in the late 18th century, and in 1959 the town of Zlatopil, known from a 1619 map, was merged into it. In 2001 it was listed among Ukraine's historic settlements.

Notable people of Novomyrhorod

Painter Anna Bilinska-Bohdanowicz (1854–1893) was born in Zlatopil, now part of the town; writers Mykola Ponedilok (1922–1976) and Oleksandr Zhovna (born 1960) are natives. Volodymyr Vynnychenko (1880–1951) graduated from the Zlatopil gymnasium in 1900, where poet Mykola Zerov (1890–1937) taught. Senior Soldier Yevhenii Prysiazhnyi, born here, fell near Savur-Mohyla on 23 August 2014.

Novomyrhorod today

The town lies on the Velyka Vys River, 72 km from Kropyvnytskyi, next to Lake Lonho. Landmarks include St Elijah's Church (1786), St Nicholas Church (1809), the Zlatopil gymnasium building (1885–1891), the town hospital complex (1910–1913) and the Taras Shevchenko monument (2010), with the Panski Hory and Velyka Vys nature reserves nearby.
