Novoselytsia, a town where three borders met

Novoselytsia traces its history to 1456, when Shyshkivtsi on the Prut was first recorded; Novoselytsia later grew on its site. In 1774 the settlement was divided, the western part going to Austria and the eastern part to the Ottoman Empire. For over a century it sat where the borders of Austria, Russia and Turkey met and served as a customs post. The railway from Chernivtsi arrived in 1884, and town status followed in 1940.

Natives include American economist Abba Lerner (1903–1982) and French chess master Wolf Bergraser (1904–1986). Writer Boles?aw H?jdeu (1812–1886) served at the Novoselytsia customs house in the 1840s–1850s.

The town stands on the left bank of the Prut where the Rokytnianka joins it, 30 km from Chernivtsi, and has the highest share of residents of Moldovan identity of any town in Ukraine.
