Novosilky: from a farmstead to a gardeners’ village

Novosilky was founded in 1929 on the site of the Novoselytsia farmstead, which had 19 households and 80 residents in 1926. In 1941 it lay between Kyiv’s first and second defence lines and was retaken in October 1943. The village grew fastest in the 1950s–1960s, and in May 1972 it joined the new Chabany settlement council. In 1973 the fruit and berry research institute moved here from Kyiv’s Kytaiv — today the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS, which has bred about 300 fruit and berry varieties. A school for 900 pupils opened in 1985.
