Ovidiopol: from a fortress to the present day
People lived here long before the town: archaeologists found remains of six ancient settlements from the Scythian, Sarmatian and Chernyakhov periods. Later the site was occupied by Khadzhyder, in 1784 a Tatar settlement and port also home to Armenians and Moldovans. After the Russo-Turkish war of 1787–1791 an earthen fortress designed by engineer-colonel Franz de Volan was laid out nearby, and 15 June 1793 is regarded as Ovidiopol's birthday. On 27 January 1795 the town was renamed after the Roman poet Ovid, as an ancient skeleton found during construction was then attributed to him. In 1843 the Polish writer J?zef Ignacy Kraszewski visited the town.
Notable people of Ovidiopol
Ovidiopol is the birthplace of Hero of the Soviet Union Petro Verteletskyi, honoured with a memorial plaque on School No. 2, where he studied in 1930–1934. Two-time Olympic handball champion Tetiana Kocherhina-Makarets began her sporting career here. Natives also include Honoured Artist of Ukraine Larysa Nedin and educator and philologist Yakiv Hinkulov. The town honours senior sailor of the Border Guard Service Yevhen Kolisnychenko (1988–2014), a defender in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Landmarks and local highlights
The town lies on the eastern shore of the Dniester Estuary, on the Odesa–Reni road. A monument to Ovid by sculptor Mykola Stepanov stands on the estuary shore, and the classicist Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker (1823) is on Portova Street. Other landmarks include the mass grave of 80 soldiers killed liberating the town in April 1944 and the Sports Palace opened in 2004. The Ovidiopol winery, built in 1925–1927, bottles its own Ovidiopol White and Ovidiopol Red, and on 15 June 2002, Town Day, a reconstructed ancient Greek galley, Perseus, was launched here.
