Pavlohrad: from Luhanska sloboda to Hero City
Pavlohrad grew out of the Matviivka farmsteads, which became the sloboda of Matviivka in 1775 after the Zaporizhian Sich was abolished. From December 1779 it hosted the headquarters of the Luhansk Pikemen Regiment and was renamed Luhanska. In 1784 a decree of Catherine II granted it town status and the name Pavlohrad, as a district town of the Katerynoslav Viceroyalty. From 1831 the town was built to a plan by the Scottish architect William Hastie. Merchant I. K. Shalin became the first mayor in 1871, and under mayor A. V. Paramanin, elected in 1892, new churches and gymnasiums were built. By the late 19th century Pavlohrad grain was exported to London and Istanbul, and from the 1950s the town became the centre of the Western Donbas coal basin. On 1 October 2025 Pavlohrad was awarded the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine in tribute to the courage and resilience of its residents.
