Perechyn: a little history

Perechyn is first mentioned in 1399; an old trade route from the Uzh valley ran through it to Nevytske Castle. From 1323 to 1691 it belonged to the Nevytske domain, and in 1599 it had 65 households. From 1671 Perechyn was the centre of the Turia valley district of seven villages. The Bantlin wood-chemical plant was built here in 1893, and the Uzhhorod–Perechyn–Velykyi Bereznyi railway was laid in 1872–1904. Perechyn became an urban-type settlement and district centre in 1947 and a town on 4 March 2004.

Notable natives of Perechyn

Hungarian sculptor Lajos Ungv?ri (1902–1984), Kossuth Prize laureate, was born here, and an old oak in town bears his name. Painter Yulii Skakandi (born 1945), People's Artist of Ukraine, and physicist Oleksandr Slyvka (born 1960), vice-rector of Uzhhorod National University, are also natives.

Perechyn today

The town sits on the Uzh River where the Turia joins it, ringed by the Plishka, Synatoriia and Yasinia mountains. Landmarks include St Nicholas Church (1769), the Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine (1906), the monument to postman Fedir Fekete and the Way of the Cross on Hurka Hill.
