Peremyshliany: from the first mention to today

The first written mention of Peremyshliany dates from 1473. The town belonged to noble families including the Sieniawski, Czartoryski, Lubomirski and Potocki, received Magdeburg rights in 1623 (confirmed in 1728), and has an inventory of its castle from 1698. It passed to Austria after 1772 and was a district centre from 1860 to 1939. In 1857 Yu. Lubinetsky founded a beekeeping school here, the only one in Austria-Hungary, and a railway arrived in 1909.

People linked to the town

Blessed Omelian Kovch (1884–1944) was parish priest of St Nicholas's church from 1921, helped persecuted Jews, died in a concentration camp and was beatified in 2001. The painter Mykhailo Myrosh (1893–1976) was born here, and economist Veniamin Sikora, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, is also linked to the town. Native Roman Kozii is a Hero of Ukraine.

Peremyshliany today

The town stands on the Hnyla Lypa River, 45 km from Lviv, on the Lviv - Ivano-Frankivsk highway. Landmarks include the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (17th century), St Nicholas Church (1805), the local history museum, the People's House and a monument to Omelian Kovch. Univ Lavra and Svirzh Castle lie nearby. Twin towns are Skawina, ?osice and Jan?w Podlaski in Poland. Flowers can be ordered from anywhere in the world and delivered in Peremyshliany.
