Shakhtarske: a young miners' town

Shakhtarske is one of the youngest towns in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: the first stone of the miners' settlement was laid on 25 May 1954, as the first Western Donbas mines were being sunk. The settlement was named Shakhtarske on 16 August 1957 and became a town on 25 February 1966 under the name Pershotravensk. The first mines opened in 1963 and 1965 and a third, today's Yuvileina, in 1970. On 26 September 2024 the town got its original name, Shakhtarske, back. Natives Kostiantyn Kovalov (1980–2014) and Taras Malyshenko (1984–2014) gave their lives defending Ukraine.

Notable people of Shakhtarske

Footballer Yaroslav Rakitskyi (1989), former defender of Shakhtar Donetsk and the Ukrainian national team, comes from Shakhtarske, as does footballer Artur Zapadnia (1990). Composer and singer Viktoriia Korniikova (1990), founder of the band Lel?ka, and singer-songwriter Artur Kulpovych (1979) were also born here.

Shakhtarske today

The town lives by coal, with the Stepova and Yuvileina mines still in operation. It lies 123 km from Dnipro on the E50 highway. A miner's statue greets visitors at the entrance, and the central square with the Shakhtar Palace of Culture is the heart of town, next to the Glory Memorial and the Church of the Presentation, housed since 1992 in a former cinema.
