Pervomaisk: a town of three rivers and three settlements

Pervomaisk grew out of three separate settlements. In 1743 Myrhorod colonel Vasyl Kapnist and French engineer Daniel de Bosquet built the six-bastion Orlivskyi fort here, and the Orel settlement was populated mainly by Zaporozhian Cossacks. In 1750 the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth built the Bohopil fortification between the mouths of the Kodyma and Syniukha, and in 1762 the Holta settlement appeared on the Ottoman right bank of the Southern Bug. Orel was renamed Olviopol in 1782, and the three parts were united into one town only in 1919. In 1925 the first hydroelectric plant on the Southern Bug was founded here.

Notable people of Pervomaisk

Natives include poet and film director Mykola Vinhranovskyi (1936–2004), a Shevchenko Prize laureate, Edgar de Wahl (1867–1948), creator of the Occidental language, painter Andrii Antoniuk (1943–2013), People's Artist of Ukraine, and composer Mykola Vilinskyi (1888–1956). Senior Lieutenant Ihor Kondratevych, born in Pervomaisk, was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine in 2025.

The town stands where the Southern Bug, Syniukha and Kodyma meet; the borders of the Commonwealth, the Ottoman Empire and the Zaporozhian Host once converged here. The oldest active church is the Intercession Church (1805) with its 1839 bell tower. Visitors can see the Museum of the Strategic Missile Forces, the local history museum (opened 1927), the Ye.
