Petrove: a town with Zaporozhian roots

Petrove first appears in writing in an order of the Zaporozhian Host dated 28 April 1772, instructing Petro Staryi of the Dzhereliv kurin to found a sloboda on the Inhulets; maps of 1778–1779 already show the sloboda of Petrova. Legend says a Cossack named Petryk settled here in the late 17th century and may have given the place its name. A church stood here by 1774 and long kept Zaporozhian relics. In 1886 Petrove had 5,357 residents, two churches, a school, seven shops and four annual fairs. It became an urban-type settlement on 2 April 1963.

Notable people of Petrove

Petrove is the birthplace of literary scholar and academician Hryhorii Verves (1920–2001), poet Heorhii Knysh (1922–1997), swimming coach Vira Smielova (1939), who trained Olympic champions, and restorer Oleksandr Minzhulin (1941), known for restoring the gold pectoral from the Tovsta Mohyla mound. Priest and teacher Antonii Manzhelei (1839–1879) served here and founded the local school.

Petrove today

Here the Berezenihova Balka flows into the Inhulets, close to the Iskrivka Reservoir. Cossack burial mounds named Beketova, Sicheva and Starecha rise around the town, and the Intercession Church stands in its centre. Petrove is home to FC Inhulets, finalist of the 2018–2019 Ukrainian Cup and a Premier League club for three seasons. Our courier delivers flowers to any street in Petrove.
