Legend says the town of Rokytnia once stood here, and after the Mongol invasion only its cellars (pohreby) remained — hence the name Pohrebyshche. The town is known from the 16th century: a castle was built in the 1580s, still recalled by the name Castle Hill. In 1653 Cossack colonel Ivan Bohun freed the town from Czarniecki's Polish army. From 1758 to 1917 it belonged to the Rzewuski magnate family, who built two palaces here.

Pohrebyshche, with about 10,000 residents, is the centre of the Pohrebyshche urban hromada in Vinnytsia district. The town lies in the upper reaches of the Ros River. Landmarks include the Dormition and St. Michael's churches, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and Castle Hill, site of the 16th-century castle.
