Pereshchepyne: from a Cossack district to a town

Pereshchepyne is first recorded in 1764, when it belonged to the Oril palanka of the New Sich; former Zaporozhian Mykyta Korzh listed it among the 17 oldest Cossack settlements of the Katerynoslav region. Rebuilt after the Russo-Turkish war of 1768–1774, it grew on the road from Poltava region via Novomoskovsk to Katerynoslav and on to Kherson and Crimea. It became a volost centre in 1806, hosting three or four fairs a year, received urban-type status in 1938 and became a town in 2000.

Notable people of Pereshchepyne

Natives include astronomer Viktor Vakulik (1953–2012), Hero of the Soviet Union Colonel Ivan Motuz (1918–1979), honoured with a memorial sign in town, and Sergeant Ivan Kudenchuk (1983–2014), who fell near Ilovaisk and was awarded the Order for Courage. In 1890 the American traveller Thomas Stevens passed through and described the town in Through Russia on a Mustang.

Pereshchepyne today

The town lies on the left bank of the winding Oril River near the mouth of the Shyroka Kilchenka and the Dnipro–Donbas canal, on the M18 highway. Landmarks include the Transfiguration and St Sergius churches, Taras Shevchenko Park with the poet's monument, the MiG-21 aircraft monument and the memorial sign to Ivan Motuz.
