Radekhiv: a bit of history

Radekhiv was first recorded in 1472, when the area belonged to the Principality of Belz. In 1578 the Tatars razed it to the ground, as tax books of the time show. In the early 18th century the town passed to the Mier family, who built a palace here, and in the second half of the 19th century to Count Badeni, who enlarged the palace, planted a park and greenhouse and in 1910 funded the Lviv–Stoianiv railway through the town.

Famous people of Radekhiv

Composer Ihor Bilozir (1955–2000), leader of the band Vatra and author of the songs Pshenychne pereveslo and Svitlytsia, was born here; the local music school bears his name. Colonel Oleksandr Makhachek (1972–2022), a native of Radekhiv, was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.

Radekhiv today

The town lies on the Ostrivka River, a tributary of the Styr. Its landmarks include the 19th-century Market Square, the town hall (1910), the People's House (1912), St Nicholas Church (1918), a 17th-century synagogue and the remains of the palace walls and greenhouse.
