Rohatyn: a short history

Rohatyn is known from 1184, when it belonged to the Galician principality of Yaroslav Osmomysl, and by 1366 it was recorded as a fortress. In 1415 the Galician boyar Volchko Presluzhych moved the town to the site of the village of Filipovychi and granted it Magdeburg rights. In 1535 King Sigismund I confirmed its privileges and gave Rohatyn a coat of arms with a deer antler and the letter R. In 1589 the brothers Yurii and Ivan Rohatynets founded a church brotherhood modelled on the Lviv Dormition Brotherhood, and a Ukrainian gymnasium opened here in 1909.

People of Rohatyn

Rohatyn is linked to Roxelana (Anastasia Lisovska), wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, traditionally said to be a local priest's daughter. Natives include brotherhood leader Yurii Rohatynets (1555–1608), French composer Norbert Glanzberg (1910–2001), who wrote songs for ?dith Piaf, musicologist Borys Kudryk (1897–1952) and sport shooter Lesia Leskiv (born 1963).

Rohatyn today

The town lies in the Opillia region on the Hnyla Lypa River, 69 km from Lviv. Its jewel is the wooden Church of the Holy Spirit (1644–1645) with an iconostasis of 1647–1650, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other sights include the stone Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church (1666), the wooden St Nicholas Church (1729) and the Roxelana monument (1999).
