Rokytne: from a Cossack estate to a town on the Ros

Rokytne’s written history starts in the 15th century, although a royal charter of 1590, granting the estate to registered Cossack hetman Kryshtof Kosynskyi, is sometimes counted as its first mention. His dispute over these lands with Bila Tserkva elder Janusz Ostrogski grew into the uprising of 1591–1593. From 1654 Rokytne was a company town of the Kaniv Regiment; Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi was executed here on 16 March 1664, and Pylyp Orlyk’s army took the town in 1711. The 1897 census counted 864 households and 5,625 residents, and in 1923 Rokytne became a district centre.

Notable people

Biathlete Tetiana Vodopianova, European champion and 1998 Nagano Olympian, was born here. Aircraft designer Dmytro Tomashevych (1899–1974), nuclear physicist Volodymyr Karasov (1934–1993), Professor Yurii Hutarevych and sculptor Olena Shylimova are also linked to Rokytne. The town honours its native Ihor Zinych (1989–2015), a medic of the 80th Brigade, defender of Donetsk airport and Hero of Ukraine, after whom a street is named.

Rokytne today

Rokytne lies on both banks of the Rokytna river where it meets the Ros, framed by mixed forest to the west and south. Sights include the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1897–1901), remains of the Serpent’s Wall ramparts in the Pishchane tract and the Kolos stadium, first built in 1949. The Bila Tserkva — Myronivka railway runs through town, known for its dairy, industrial park and forest holiday bases. We will bring your bouquet to any address in Rokytne.
