Sambir: from the first record to today
Sambir's recorded history begins in 1241, when the Horde sacked the old town (today's Staryi Sambir) and the survivors moved to the fortified settlement of Pohonych on the Dniester, later called New Sambir. On 13 December 1390 Spytko of Melsztyn, owner of the Sambir lands, allowed a town to be founded here under Magdeburg law. In 1530 starosta Krzysztof Odrow??-Szyd?owiecki surrounded the centre with walls, ramparts and moats, and in 1545 Queen Bona Sforza bought the Sambir estate. The coat of arms with a deer pierced by an arrow is known from a 1533 seal and stayed unchanged for almost 500 years.
Notable people of Sambir

Border Guard colonel Ihor Dashko (1977–2022), a defender of Mariupol, was born here and posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.
