Shepetivka: a little history

Shepetivka's documented history begins in 1594, when the village belonged to Andrii Zhdiarskyi in the Kremenets district of Volhynia. It later passed to the Zas?awski, Lubomirski and Sanguszko princes, and in 1859 to Count Alfred Potocki. A sugar factory opened in 1843, and the Kyiv — Brest railway came through in 1873. In 1923 Shepetivka became a district centre and on 29 May that year was officially recognised as a town.

Famous people of Shepetivka

Natives include Jewish writer Hryhorii Preigerzon (1900–1969), Czech physician and diplomat V?clav Girsa (1875–1954) and astronomer Rostyslav Kondratiuk (b. 1938). Hero of Ukraine Mykola Dziavulskyi (1958–2014), one of the Heavenly Hundred, lived and is buried here; Lyceum No. 1 bears his name.

Shepetivka today

The town lies on the Huska and Kosetska rivers, 100 km by road from Khmelnytskyi, and is a rail junction with Shepetivka and Shepetivka-Podilska stations. It has long been known as a spa: iron-rich mineral water has been used for treatment since 1821, and Prince Eustachy Sanguszko opened healing baths here in 1884. Sights include the railway station, the local history museum, the Museum of Propaganda — the first in Ukraine to debunk Soviet and Russian propaganda myths — the arboretum, the Oak Grove natural monument and the synagogue.
