What to know about Shpola

Shpola is first recorded in documents from 1594. Destroyed by Tatar and Turkish troops in the late 17th century, it revived in the early 18th century. In 1768 locals led by Stepan Hlavatskyi and Savka Plykhanenko joined the Koliivshchyna uprising, and in 1798 the Shpola estate was bought by Daria Lopukhina. A sugar factory opened in 1851, railway construction began in 1874, and Shpola became a town in 1938.

Shpola sits on the Shpolka River, 75 km from Cherkasy; a 14-metre monument erected in 2011 marks it as the geographical centre of Ukraine. Sights include the bronze Shevchenko monument (1979), the neoclassical Abaza Palace with Dariivka Park, St Nicholas Church and the 2009 clock tower that plays 12 Ukrainian melodies.
