Shumsk first appears in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1149 as a fortified town in southern Pohoryna. Under Prince Inhvar Yaroslavych it served as the southern capital of the principality, and in the early 13th century it was the centre of an appanage principality. His son, Prince Sviatoslav of Shumsk, fell at the Battle of the Kalka in 1223. In 1259 Prince Vasylko Romanovych negotiated here with the Tatar commander Burundai. Shumsk became a town in 1999, marking its 850th anniversary.
