Skvyra: from a 1390 charter to today

Skvyra is first documented in a 1390 charter of Kyiv Prince Volodymyr Olherdovych confirming the holdings of Yurii Ivantych Polovets. In 1482 the army of Crimean Khan Mengli Giray razed the settlement; revival began after King Sigismund III granted Prince M. Ruzhynskyi the right to Skvyra and to build a castle on 12 June 1591. The town was declared a sloboda in 1615 and received Magdeburg rights in 1616. In 1648 it became a company town of the Bila Tserkva Regiment, from 1796 a county town of Kyiv Governorate, and in 1846 Taras Shevchenko recorded folk songs here.

Famous people of Skvyra

Skvyra is the birthplace of the Hebrew essayist and philosopher Ahad Ha'am (Asher Ginzberg, 1856–1927) and of forestry scientist Petro Pasternak (1925–1994). Poet Maksym Rylskyi lived and worked here in the early 20th century, writer Arkadii Liubchenko graduated from the local gymnasium, and actress Mariia Starytska ran the town's amateur drama circle.

Skvyra today

The town lies on the Skvyrka River, where the Domantivka flows into it. Its historic centre includes the Church of St John of Nepomuk (1885), the Zemstvo Board building (1911–1912), the Nobility Assembly house and the 1909 boys' gymnasium on Nezalezhnosti Street, the Babaiev mansion and the local history museum on Yuvileina Square.
