What to know about Solone

The first settlement near today's Solone, Novoselivka, appeared in the late 17th century. In the early 18th century its residents were moved to the Solonenka stream, founding Enhelhardivka, and in the 1780s the village became Solonenke, reportedly after the salty river water. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1803. In 1852 the Mennonite Bergmann family founded the Abramivskyi farmstead, which grew into a large estate; the family helped build the zemstvo hospital and school. Solone became a district centre in 1923 and an urban-type settlement in 1960.

Notable people of Solone

Archaeologist, museum expert, teacher and painter Vasyl Stromenko (1880–1937), an associate of Dmytro Yavornytskyi, was born here, as was orthopaedic surgeon Yurii Kolontai (1925–2002), professor and laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR.

Landmarks and local highlights

The town lies on the Solona River, which joins the Mokra Sura 5 km downstream; Copper and Bronze Age Yamnaya settlements and burial mounds were found nearby. Its signature building is the Bergmann Brothers' House, now home to the local history museum, archive and library, and one Bergmann manor is a listed architectural monument.
