Sribne: a settlement with chronicle history

Sribne's recorded history begins in 1174, when Prince Ihor Sviatoslavych caught up with the Cumans near the town of Serebrianyi on 20 July, defeated them and recovered their loot. Before 1640 Prince Yarema Vyshnevetskyi founded a church brotherhood here with a school and a hospital. From 1649 Sribne was a small town and the seat of the Sribne company of the Pryluky Regiment. In the 18th century it was famous for "Sribnianka" tobacco, exported to Moscow, St Petersburg, Warsaw, Riga and Denmark. In 1842 landowner Tryfonovskyi bought the estate, built a sugar factory and a soap works, laid out a park and erected a three-storey, 72-room palace.

Notable people of Sribne

The actress Hanna Zatyrkevych-Karpynska (1855–1921) was born here, and her birthplace is a protected historic monument. Surgeon Yakiv Sapolovych (1760–1830), manager of the St Petersburg medical instruments factory and inventor of new surgical tools, was also a native, as was UNR Army officer Omelian Kuznetsov (1892–1968).

Sribne today

Sribne lies on the Lysohir and Sriblianka rivers, 45 km from Pryluky railway station. Its highlights are the 25.8-hectare Sribne Park, laid out in the early 19th century on the Musin-Pushkin estate, Danchycheva Hill, a geological natural monument above the Lysohir floodplain, the Sribne wetland reserve and the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross.
