Stara Syniava: a short history

Stara Syniava became a town in 1543, when King Sigismund I the Old allowed Miko?aj Sieniawski, voivode of Belz, to found a town on the Sieniawa field and granted it Magdeburg rights. It belonged to the Sieniawski family and, from the mid-17th century, to the Czartoryskis; a Roman Catholic church was built here in 1640. In July 1648 Cossack troops led by Maksym Kryvonis freed the town, and locals fought in Bohdan Khmelnytsky's army at the Battle of Pyliavtsi. In 1797 it became a volost centre of Podolia Governorate, and in 1917 it joined the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Names linked to Stara Syniava

Locals remember paediatrician and professor Borys Brukhanskyi (1871–1943), teacher Onysiia Blazhkun (1925–2013), who headed the Berdychiv history museum, and journalist and local historian Yan Kozelskyi (1954–2018). The community also honours Master Sergeant Oleh Kovalevskyi (1975–2022), who distinguished himself in combat during the Russian invasion.

Stara Syniava today

The settlement lies on the Ikva River, 12 km from Adampil railway station. Landmarks include the Dengor Palace (now a hospital), the Holy Protection Church, the Church of the Transfiguration, St Barbara's Chapel, the former Catholic church building and the Battle of Pyliavtsi diorama museum (1995).
