Strzegom: a thousand years of history

Strzegom first appears in writing as «gradice Ztrigom» in the 1155 Wroc?aw bull of Pope Adrian IV. An early medieval stronghold of the ?l??anie tribe later became a castellan's seat, and in 1149 Bishop Walter of Wroc?aw consecrated its first church. In 1242 Duchess Anna, widow of Henry the Pious, probably granted it town rights under German law. Duke Bolko I built its defensive walls in 1291–1299, and in 1345 King Casimir III the Great allowed merchants of the Duchy of ?widnica, which included Strzegom, to trade with Rus'. On 4 June 1745 Frederick II of Prussia defeated the Austrians nearby at the Battle of Hohenfriedberg (Dobromierz).
