Svaliava: from its first mention to today

Svaliava appears in 12th-century documents as a small settlement of the Hungarian lord Bet-Betke. For more than 200 years it was run by the heirs of Count Sch?nborn-Buchheim, and by the 1790s it had a distillery, fairs and early use of its mineral water. The Lviv–Vienna railway reached the town in 1881, opening export markets for the water, and in 1890–1895 Count Erwin Friedrich von Sch?nborn-Buchheim built the Beregvar hunting lodge here.

Famous natives of Svaliava

Composer Yevhen Stankovych (1942), Hero of Ukraine (2008), was born in Svaliava, as were historian and ethnographer Yurii Venelin (1802–1839) and writer and folklorist Oleksandr Mytrak (1837–1913).

Svaliava today

The town lies on the Latorytsia River and is called Ukraine's mineral-water capital, with sanatoriums such as Poliana nearby. The Beregvar palace has 365 windows, 52 rooms and 12 entrances, matching the days, weeks and months of the year. Other sights include the "Svaliava Coat of Arms" sculpture, the Sch?nborn Oak and the wooden Church of the Archangel Michael in former Bystryi (1588, 1759).
