Svitlovodsk: a town born of a dam
Modern Svitlovodsk began in 1954, when construction of the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Station started on the Dnipro and a builders' settlement grew on the wooded Taburyshche headland. On 17 March 1961 it was merged with the old village of Taburyshche and with Novoheorgiivsk, relocated from the flood zone — the former Kryliv, which had received Magdeburg rights in 1615. The new town was first named Khrushchev, renamed Kremhes on 25 October 1962, and has been called Svitlovodsk since 1969. Oleksandr Dovzhenko visited the construction site in 1956, and scenes of his Poem of the Sea were filmed here in 1958.
Notable people of Svitlovodsk
Poet Viktor Sokolov (1919–2002), an honorary citizen, was born in Taburyshche, now part of the town. Journalist Vadym Boiko (1962–1992), a member of Ukraine's first parliament, was a native of Svitlovodsk. The town also honours Yevhenii Lemeshenko (1995–2024), born here and posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.
Places every local knows
The town sits on bluffs above the right bank of the Kremenchuk Reservoir, and its signature sight is the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Station. The 109-hectare Shevchenko Park with its 1978 monument to the poet lies in the centre, near the Intercession Cathedral, the Palace of Culture (1954–1956) and the local history museum in the house of first builder M. D. Karpov. Each street has its own trees — poplars, acacias, lindens or chestnuts — and in summer residents enjoy sandy beaches and a stage of the Kremenchuk Reservoir sailing cup.
