Tysmenytsia: from its first record to today

Ukrainian law recognises 1062 as the founding date of Tysmenytsia, one of the oldest towns in the Carpathian foothills. In 1448 King Casimir IV of Poland granted it Magdeburg rights, and the town became a notable centre of crafts and trade. In September 1592 local furriers formed a guild with the permission of the town's owner Miko?aj Potocki, and in 1630 Miko?aj "Bear's Paw" Potocki founded a Dominican church and monastery here. In 1891 Ukraine's first fur factory opened in Tysmenytsia.

People of Tysmenytsia

Natives include the prominent Western Ukrainian politician Kost Levytskyi (1859–1941), the poet and translator Oleh Lysheha (1949–2014), whose poems in English translation won a PEN award, and the literary critic Kost Horbal (1836–1903). The churchman Yov Kniahynytskyi (c. 1550–1621) was born here, as was Jacob Freud, father of Sigmund Freud, in 1815. The Polish poet and ethnographer Wincenty Pol (1807–1872) stayed in the town for several years and wrote his poem "Song of Our Home" here.

Tysmenytsia today

The town lies in the Stanyslaviv basin on the Vorona River, on the N18 road from Ivano-Frankivsk to Ternopil. Its landmarks include the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1732), a monument of national importance, the brick St Nicholas Church (1869), the Church of St Michael the Archangel, the Stepan Havryliuk Museum of Town History, and monuments to Taras Shevchenko and Viacheslav Chornovil. Tysmenytsia is known for fur crafts: its fur factory processes about 10 million pelts a year. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Tysmenytsia.
