Tomakivka: from a Zaporozhian settlement to today

Tomakivka dates back to the 16th century, when a Zaporozhian settlement appeared here as part of the Kodak palanka. In the 1740s families serving at the Khortytsia shipyard and customs post settled on the site, and from 1777 Tomakivka was a state military sloboda. Locals farmed, raised cattle, fished and traded as chumaks, while five annual fairs made it a market hub. By 1886 it was a volost centre with two churches and two schools. Bronze Age and Scythian burial mounds nearby point to a much older past: an 1861 excavation uncovered gold jewellery and fragments of Greek pottery.

Notable people of Tomakivka

Writer Mykola Kuzmenko (1862–1942), a member of the Ukrainian Central Rada, was born here, as was sculptor and graphic artist Dmytro Krasniak (1927–2003), after whom the local art gallery is named. Actor, director and theatre critic Andrii Dubravin (1874–1954) died in Tomakivka.

Tomakivka today

The town sits where the Tomakivka and Kyslychuvata rivers meet, 92 km from Dnipro. Landmarks include the Holy Trinity Church, the Annunciation Church, the D. Krasniak Art Gallery, the local history museum and an old mill built by German colonists. Families here still keep the wedding tradition of baking the "dyven" loaf.
